Psalm Friday

He makes Everything Beautiful
Psalm Friday
Psalm 22, continued

We will continue on in our journey today through Psalm 22, the Psalm of the Cross. We have heard the mobs of angry people screaming insults at our Lord. Our hearts have ached with unspeakable pain knowing that we were the ones for whom He died to save. Today, my friend won’t be any different. Today our eyes will once again behold a picture we will not care to see and our ears will hear words we’ll wish were never uttered. As hard as it might be, I believe this is a journey you and I must continue on with; because it is on this journey that we see the beautiful love our God has for us.

“But I am a worm and not a man, scorned by men and despised by the people. All
who see Me mock Me; they hurl insults, shaking their heads: ‘He trusts in the
LORD; let the LORD rescue Him. Let Him deliver Him, since He delights in Him.’”
Psalm 22:6-8, NIV
My mind cannot even begin to grasp the emotions Christ would have felt as He hung upon Calvary’s cross. Oh, how His heart must have ached as He looked into the eyes of men and women as they hurled insults at Him. To them He was nothing; not even a man, but only a worm. He was despised by those He loved so dearly. He was ridiculed and mocked.

“And those who passed by blasphemed Him, wagging their heads and saying, “You
who destroy the temple and build it in three days, save Yourself! If You are the
Son of God, come down from the cross.” Likewise the chief priests also, mocking
with the scribes and elders, said, “He saved others; Himself He cannot save. If
He is the King of Israel, let Him now come down from the cross, and we will
believe Him. He trusted in God; let Him deliver Him now if He will have Him; for
He said, ‘I am the Son of God.’” Even the robbers who were crucified with Him
reviled Him with the same thing.”
Matthew 27:39-44, NKJV

“If You are the Son of God, then why don’t You save Yourself? Come on Jesus, show us what You’re made of. Call down ten thousand angels to rescue You. Where’s Your God now?” Over and over and over these insults rang in His ears. One by one by one they passed Him by shaking their heads in disgust. As each hate-filled word was uttered and as each one passed Him by, the heart of Christ was filled with more anguish and pain. I dare say it wasn’t the physical pain that caused Him the most grief, but rather it was the pain of rejection He felt as each one turned their backs on Him and chose to walk the other way.

Very few looked beyond the bloody, beaten body of the Savior that day; very few understood why He didn’t come down off the cross. Praise His name, Christ looked past the anger and the hatred. He heard more than raging insults and saw beyond the heads shaking in disgust. Christ saw deep into the hearts of all those that surrounded Him that day and saw hurt; He beheld a people who need a Savior, a people who needed love, a people who needed to made beautiful. And that’s exactly what He did; He made us beautiful through His beaten, battered body.
“He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the
hearts of men; yet they cannot fathom what God has done from beginning to end.”
Ecclesiastes 3:11, NIV

Don't just Hear... OBEY

It's been a little while since we looked at the Shema found in Deuteronomy 6. If you would like to read the other posts in this particular series just click here, here, and here. Today we're going to come to the end of our look at these verses.

Let's quickly review what the Shema is before we dig into God's Word. The Shema teaches us, as parents, about our role in the Spiritual rearing of our children. The word "shema" is a Hebrew word which means “hear”. It has become the Jewish confession of faith and is recited, along with Deuteronomy 11:13-21 and Numbers 15:37-41, twice a day by the devout Jew.

We saw in verse 7 of Deuteronomy 6 that we are to be diligently teaching our children the ways and commands of God. This means it's a constant thing; ALWAYS teaching, ALWAYS talking, ALWAYS fleshing out His commands. When we sit and when we walk. When we put them to bed at night and when they get up in the mornings. Here are a few practical ways our family has found to do this.

*My kids and I take "nature walks" every Friday. (Well, almost every Friday!) As we walk, we talk about God's creation; about how only God Almighty, who is all-powerful could have created something out of nothing and made it into this beautiful place we called planet earth. The kids ususally find something to bring home and put in their Nature Journals and then we'll write a verse to go along with it praising God for what He has done.

*Each night when we put our kids to bed we pray with them. Before pray, we ask them a few questions: How did God bless you today? What did God show you that you need to work on today? Is there anything you need to confess to the Lord before you go to sleep? How can we pray for you?

*Even though our kids are only 8, 5, and 1, every morning we have a "quiet time" together. I myself have tried to make it a priority to rise earlier than anyone else in my home so that I can spend my time with the Lord and prepare for the day. On those days that I choose to hit the snooze button and go back to sleep... well, let's just say, it's not a very good day for any of us. I want my kids to know how important it is to start their days with the Lord, asking Him what His plan for the day is.

"You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets
between your eyes."
Deuteronomy 6:8, NKJV

This verse means that we are to be continually meditating upon and being led by the commands of the Lord. Later on in Jewish history the people took this literally and began tieing phylacteries (little boxes containing these verses) around their arms and strapped them to their foreheads with pieces of leather. In looking more into this I found that often times phylacteries were worn on the upper arms so that when one crossed his arms in prayer God's Word would be closest to his heart. Makes me wonder if this was the beginning of praying God's Word? I've heard of ladies safety pinning index cards with Scripture on them to their shirts and I've made signs and hung them around my kids necks. Whatever works, right!?!

"You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates."
Deuteronomy 6:9, NKJV

I don't know about you, but I've got Scripture posted everywhere in my house. Some of them are beautifully framed pictures, some are cute little things I've printed from my computer, and others are index cards taped to my bathroom mirror. I need reminders of His Word everywhere I go. My aunt recently made for my kid's rooms beautiful vinyl wall art that I can't wait to hang. On it is their name, the meaning of their name, and the Scripture verse that goes with it. This will hang in their rooms above their beds to remind them that they belong to God and He has a special plan for their lives.

My children will one day stand before the Lord, as will I, and answer directly to Him about how they have lived their lives, under His leading or according to their own selfish desires. It is my responsibility and privilege as their parent to bring them up in home that has allowed God to be its foundation. It is my responsibility and privilege to teach them the ways of God, to love them with the love of the Lord, and to discipline them according to God’s Word. Ultimately, I cannot make them follow the Lord, but it is my responsibility to do all that I can to aid them in traveling down the straight and narrow.

Thank You Father for truths found in Deuteronomy 6. May we not only hear these commands, but follow and obey them.

You are what you eat!

How many times have you heard your mama say, "you are what you eat", "garbage in, garbage out", "if you lay with a dog, you're gonna get fleas"? Ok, maybe not so much the last one, but you get the point.

Over time we begin becoming like what it is that we have focused most of our time and energies on. Our time and energies can be directed toward good things, Godly things, but if those "things" become what drives us, we have driven past the purpose of God's plan.

I recently started doing a Bible Study with a friend- No Other Gods, by Kelly Minter- a study that I highly recommend. Up to this point in the study God has spoken volumes to me and I'm sure He is going to continue to speak. This past week Kelly had us look at 2 Kings 17:15.

"They rejected His decrees and the covenant He had made with
their ancestors, and they despised all His warnings. They worshiped worthless
idols, so they became worthless themselves. They followed the example of the
nations around them, disobeying the Lord’s command not to imitate them."
2 Kings 17:15, NLT

God's people had begun worshipping idols; idols that were of no value in anyway to their lives; idols that in no way, shape, or fashion led them to the throne of God. And the result? God's people became exactly like the idols- there was nothing of godliness about them. They were in no way, shape, or fashion being a reflection of God Almighty. At this moment in their lives, they were worthless to Kingdom work. Ouch!

I don't know about you, but I've been there. I've gotten so caught up in the worship of things and people and doing that I have lost sight of the God that I am to be worshipping and serving. Looking back on those times now I see how ineffective for the Kingdom I had become because instead of walking in God's power alone, I was relying on myself to get the job done.

So what do we do? How to we guard ourselves against becoming something other than an accurate reflection of a perfect God? The Lord showed me a verse that I am taking as a great place to start.

"I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of
Egypt; open your mouth wide, and I will fill it."
Psalm 81:10, NKJV
Just as the Lord rescued His children out from underneath the bondage of pharaoh, He has rescued us out from underneath the bondage of sin. We are to no longer feast on the things that satisfied our sin natures while in bondage, but instead we are to open wide our mouths allowing Him to fill us with the Truths of His Word.

Pull up a chair, dear friend, at His table and let's chow down!

Psalm Friday

God is still Holy and to be Praised
Psalm Friday
Psalm 22, continued

Before we embark on our journey today I would ask that you begin this time with prayer. Ask God to give you an open heart and mind to learn new truths from His Word. Read Psalm 22 through three times. Record any thoughts or questions you have in your journal. If a verse stands out to you, write it on an index card and begin committing it to memory.

Today, as we once again look upon the cross of Calvary, keep in mind that Psalm 22 has a heavy Messianic tone to it. Contained within this Psalm are numerous prophecies that were fulfilled at Calvary as our Savior hung on the cross. Last time we beheld the pain Christ experienced as He hung on the cross during that ninth hour; the pain of abandonment and hopelessness only the shoulders of the King could carry because it was the result of the outpouring of the divine wrath of God upon Him as the sin-bearer for every man, woman, boy, and girl that would every walk on this earth. From the depths of His heart, Christ roared like a lion to the very throne room of heaven, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” Today, in the midst of the pain and the grief Christ felt on the cross, we will see Him praise His Father in heaven.

“O My God, I cry in the daytime, but You do not hear; and in the night season,
and am not silent." Psalm 22:2, NKJV

These verses bring to mind the times Christ rose early in the morning and went off by Himself to pray to the Father. Scripture doesn’t record for us those prayers, but I wonder if He cried out for God to save Him from what was to come as He did that night in the Garden of Gethsemane.

“And He was withdrawn from them about a stone’s throw, and He knelt down and
prayed, saying, ‘Father, if it is Your will, take this cup away from Me;
nevertheless not My will, but Yours, be done.”
Luke 22:41-42, NKJV

As Christ hung on the cross do you think He replayed all those times in His mind when He cried out to God for this time not to come? Do you think He questioned why God hadn’t heard Him and allowed this cup to pass Him by? Do you think He wished for something greater, something less painful? Did He blame God because He was hanging on a cross beaten and battered and unrecognizable to His own mother? No, my friend, I don’t think any of these thoughts or questions ran through His mind as He hung there all alone.

In the midst of the greatest storm of His life, we can witness Jesus Christ praising His heavenly Father and trusting that His will was best.

“But You are holy, enthroned in the praises of Israel. Our fathers trusted in
You; they trusted, and You delivered them. They cried to You, and were
delivered; they trusted in You, and were not ashamed.”
Psalm 22:3-5, NKJV

Jesus Christ had faith in God Almighty to rescue Him from this storm. He had hope in the One who sat on the throne of heaven. He knew His prayers would be answered in the way that was best to fulfill the plan that God had set in motion before the foundation of the world.

I have come against some trials in my life lately and have found myself crying out to God wondering where He was and when He was going to answer. Through these verses I have been reminded that whether or not I get the answer I want in the time frame that I thought it should come, God is still holy and to be praised. Praised because He does hear the cries of His children. Praised because He does see the tears fall from my eyes. Praised because He is El Shaddai, God Almighty; the One who knows all things and holds me in the palm of His hand.
Praise Him today knowing that He will answer you in His time and in His way because His plan is far better than anything we could ever imagine.

On the Sixth Day.......Turtles

"God said, 'Let the land produce all kinds of living
creatures. Let there be livestock, and creatures that move along the ground,
and wild animals. Let there be all kinds of them."
And that's exactly what happened.'"
Genesis 1:24

Saturday midday the kids came barging through the front door screaming, "A turtle, a turtle. It's digging a hole in the yard!" Chris went out to see what all the commotion was. Sure enough there was a turtle in the yard across the street digging a hole. She used her back feet to dig down deep and pull out hand fulls of dirt. About an hour or so went by and the kids came running again, "she's laying eggs, she's laying eggs!" I grabbed my camera and ran along side them to where the turtle was. How often does one get to see a turtle laying eggs I ask you? I was amazed at what I saw. Momma turtle had dug a hole about six inches deep. The circumference of the hole wasn't too big or too small for her eggs to fall down into. It was just right. She began laying her eggs. One at a time a miracle was performed right before our eyes. After she laid the eggs, she would gently push them into the hole. When she was done laying her eggs she began grabbing hand fulls of dirt to cover her babies up and then she took off back down to the pond. Chris and I talked later about how precise she was and how only Elohim, Creator God, could have spoken such a wonder into being. Friends, our God is great and greatly to be praised!

Sometimes there is a Greater Purpose

Last Sunday my daughter and I went to pick out a new dog for our family. She picked out a cute little bundle of fur that took to her as soon as we walked in the gate. We brought little Sophie home and began loving on her and making her a part of our family. As the week passed by Sophie began getting sick. By the end of the week we knew that our time with Sophie was going to be short. Come to find out she and all of her brothers and sisters had parvo, a very deadly disease for puppies. I had done everything that I knew to do, but it was too late and Friday afternoon Sophie passed away.

Our heart's were broken into a million pieces. Why do these things happen? Why didn't God answer our prayers and heal Sophie? As we went through the weekend I asked myself these questions over and over in my mind. Our weekend was very busy so I was somewhat distracted by what had happened on Friday, but my mind continued to ask why? What is it that You are trying to teach me Lord through all of this? After we told the kids Friday night that Sophie was gone Hannah, my 8 year old daughter, went into her room and began writing and drawing (wonder where she gets that from? :) ). I went in her room and lay on her bed for about 45 minutes as she wrote and drew. This precious child brought it all into perspective for me. Here is what she wrote exactly as she wrote it.

"Sophie is a good dog. She is fun. She is not very mean. She sleeps a lot. And I love her. But she is gone. I loved her a lot. But she is dead. I am very sad. Whne I wrote this I was crying. I am sad now. I love her today still. I will never forget her. There is a place in my heart were she is. I am still sad. I remember now. She is still in my heart. I love her today. I will never ever forget her."

Can you imagine the fun God experienced with Adam and Eve as they walked in the garden together? Can you hear them laughing over the names of some of the animals God created- the sucker-footed bat, the hagfish, the star-nosed mole, the blobfish? I can see God standing over Adam and Eve watching them sleep at night. I wonder if He sang lullabies to them? God had a deep, compassionate love for Adam and Eve, but because sin crept into their hearts, and they were no longer able to live in the presence of a holy God. I believe God cried as He cast them from the garden. His heart was broken into a million pieces. He desired for them to enjoy one anothers fellowship forever. Even though he would be separated from Adam and Eve from now on, there was still a special place in His heart reserved just for them.

God desires to have a relationship with each and everyone of us. There is a special place in His heart for all of us; His heart is that big. He will never leave us, never forsake us, never forget us. He loves us the same yesterday, today, and forever. Our names, in fact, are inscribed on the palms of His hands. We may lose loved ones, our plans may change, there will be times when our hearts will grieve and there will be times when we will shout for joy. Sweet friend, God desires to be there will us through it all. Yes, it hurt to lose this little puppy, but God had a greater purpose through it all. His purpose was to remind me of His faithfulness and never-ending love.

"See, I have inscribed you on the palms of My hands;
your wall are continually before Me."
Isaiah 49:16, NKJV

Psalm Friday

The Roar of a Lion
Psalm Friday
Psalm 22, continued

“My God, My God, why hast thou forsaken Me? Why art thou so far from helping Me, and from the words of My roaring?”
Psalm 22:1, KJV

“And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, ‘Eli, Eli, lama
sabachthani?’ that is, ‘My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?’”
Matthew 27:46, NKJV

I must tell you that as I sit here meditating on this verse tears flow from my eyes. My heart is filled with great emotion, but nothing remotely comparable to the emotions experienced by Christ on the day He willingly gave His life for you and me. Come with me on a journey back to the foot of the cross. In the presence of the King of Kings and Lord of Lords, let us remove our shoes and bow our knees in order to give Him the praise due His name. Come a little closer so that you can see clearly our precious Lord and Savior as He hangs upon the tree that He once spoke into being.

“Hail to the King of the Jews,” the angry crowds screamed as they jabbed the crown of thorns upon His head. Blood now streams down His face from the wounds those sharp thorns inflicted. Bruises and open gashes cover His body because of the beating He endured. His face is swollen, His eyes blackened with bruises caused by each punch He took as He was mocked, “Prophesy! Who is the one who struck You?” Rusty nails have been driven deep into His hands and feet. A spear has been thrust into His side and blood and water flow. On the ground all around us is the blood of the King. Christ hangs there, not because of the nails that have been driven into His hands and feet but because of His love for us; because of His desire to be obedient to His Father and glorify His name.

We can see with our eyes the beaten and bruised body of the man before us, but I don’t know that our human minds can grasp the heart of this God-man. His heart is so full of love for each of us that nothing of Him is left; it is all about Christ’s heavenly Father, God Almighty. Stay with me here; His heart was full of love yet at the same time I believe it was broken and empty. As He hung there during that ninth hour, Christ experienced an abandonment and hopelessness only the shoulders of the King could carry because it was the result of the outpouring of the divine wrath of God upon Him as the sin-bearer for every man, woman, boy, and girl that would every walk on this earth. From the depths of His heart, Christ roared like a lion to the very throne room of heaven, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” Never before had Christ ever felt that kind of separation from His heavenly Father. Never before had He felt so alone. And, never before had a Father been more proud of His Son. Never again would the sacrifice of an animal be necessary for one’s atonement because the Lamb of God had just taken away the sins of the world. The Lion of Judah had fulfilled the task He was commissioned to do.

God forsook His one and only Son for a time so that He would never have to forsake His children.

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever
believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”
John 3:16, NKJV

What are the Conditions of Your Leaves?

The other day my kids and I were out running a few errands and decided stop to eat lunch. While I was getting the baby out of the van my son proceeded to pull leaves off of the tree we had parked beside.

"What are you doing!?!" I said.

"Uh, pulling these leaves off this tree", replied my son.

"Duh? (I thought) Stop! That tree doesn't belong to you and does not appreciate little boys pulling off its leaves. Would you like it if someone started pulling off your fingers? (fingers?- that's all I could think of)", I said in the famous mommy tone of voice.

Through the look of horror in his eyes he said, "I don't want anyone to pull off my fingers. I'll stop."

And to that we went inside to eat. When we came back outside to get into the van, my son ran over to look at all the leaves he had pulled off of the tree. He was surprised at what he found. No longer were those big leaves the bright shade of green they had been only about 45 minutes ago; now they were shriveled up half dead brown leaves.

"Look mom", he said "the leaves are dieing."

This happened several days ago but I haven't been able to get it out of my mind and off my heart. It has reminded me of the passage in John 15 where Jesus is speaking of the vine, the Vinedresser, and the branches that are or are not bearing fruit.
"Abide in Me (Jesus), and I in you. As the branch cannot bear
fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you,
unless you abide in Me. I am the vine, you are the branches.
He who abides in me, and I in him,
bears much fruit; for without me you can do nothing.
If anyone does not abide in
me, he is cast out as a branch and is withered."
John 15:4-6a, NKJV

Just like the leaves my son pulled from the tree that withered up and could no longer bear fruit for the tree, we too, when we are not abiding in Him will wither and cease to bear fruit for the Lord. Sadly, there are many things that tend to pull us from the vine- our jobs, our families, poor time management, hobbies, friends, the list could go on and on. As other things take precedent over our relationship with the Vinedresser it becomes evident by the condition of our leaves and the fruit, or lack there of, that we are bearing.

What are the conditions of your leaves today? Are they a bright shade of the light of His glory because you spent time basking in His love this morning? Or, have they become dull and withered because other things have pulled you away from your time with Him?

Sweet friend, remain in Him and bear much fruit so that He is glorified.

"By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so
you will be My disciples."
John 15:8, NKJV

Psalm Friday

The Psalm of the Cross
Psalm Friday
Psalm 22

Oh Beloved, we are in for a treat. We are about to embark on a journey to the foot of the cross of Calvary. Not everything we will see is going to appeal to our human eyes as something beautiful to behold; but I can promise you this, as believers in the Lord Jesus Christ, it will reach down to the depths of our hearts and reveal to us the love of our Savior. C.H Spurgeon describes Psalm 22 this way, “this Psalm is a photograph of our Lord’s saddest hours, the record of His dying words, the lachrymatory (a small vase found in ancient Rome used to catch the tears of a mourner) of His last tears, and the memorial of His expiring joys.” Yes, it is quite possible that this Psalm contains a hint of the Psalmist David, but when one looks at it in its entirety, David is but an afterthought because the beauty of the Lord Jesus is going to burst forth just as He did from the grave that could not hold Him in. Here we have a picture of the darkness of the cross and its glory shining through; Christ and His sufferings and His glory that is to follow.

Today, dear one, I would encourage you to take off your shoes as Moses did when he came before the Lord at the burning bush, for the place that we now stand together in Scripture is holy ground. Gaze before you at the cross of Calvary and behold what your Savior bore in your stead. Hear His last words. See the tears fall from His eyes. Look around you at the crowds of people who are mocking Him. Watch His blood drip, drip, drip to the ground. Notice His broken body not held to the cross by the nails in His hands and feet, but held their by His immense love for you. Worship Him today at the foot of the cross.

“1) My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me? Why are You so far from helping Me, and from the words of My groaning? 2) O My God, I cry in the daytime, but You do not hear; and in the night season, and am not silent. 3) But You are holy, enthroned in the praises of Israel. 4) Our fathers trusted in You; They trusted, and You delivered them. 5) They cried to You, and were delivered; they trusted in You, and were not ashamed. 6) But I am a worm, and no man; a reproach of men, and despised by the people. 7) All those who see Me ridicule Me; they shoot out the lip, they shake the head, saying, 8) “He trusted in the LORD, let Him rescue Him; let Him deliver Him, since He delights in Him!” 9) But You are He who took Me out of the womb; You made Me trust while on My mother’s breasts. 10) I was cast upon You from birth. From My mother’s womb You have been My God. 11) Be not far from Me, for trouble is near; for there is none to help. 12) Many bulls have surrounded Me; strong bulls of Bashan have encircled Me. 13) They gape at Me with their mouths, like a raging and roaring lion. 14) I am poured out like water, and all My bones are out of joint; My heart is like wax; it has melted within Me. 15) My strength is dried up like a potsherd, and My tongue clings to My jaws; You have brought Me to the dust of death. 16) For dogs have surrounded Me; the congregation of the wicked has enclosed Me. They pierced My hands and My feet; 17) I can count all My bones. They look and stare at Me. 18) They divide My garments among them, and for My clothing they cast lots. 19) But You, O LORD, do not be far from Me; O My Strength, hasten to help Me! 20) Deliver Me from the sword, My precious life from the power of the dog. 21) Save Me from the lion’s mouth and from the horns of the wild oxen! You have answered Me. 22) I will declare Your name to My brethren; in the midst of the assembly I will praise You. 23) You who fear the LORD, praise Him! All you descendants of Jacob, glorify Him, and fear Him, all you offspring of Israel! 24) For He has not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the afflicted; nor has He hidden His face from Him; but when He cried to Him, He heard. 25) My praise shall be of You in the great assembly; I will pay My vows before those who fear Him. 26) The poor shall eat and be satisfied; those who seek Him will praise the LORD. Let your heart live forever! 27) All the ends of the world shall remember and turn to the LORD, and all the families of the nations shall worship before You. 28) For the kingdom is the LORD’s, and He rules over the nations. 29) All the prosperous of the earth shall eat and worship; all those who go down to the dust shall bow before Him, even he who cannot keep himself alive. 30) A posterity shall serve Him. It will be recounted of the Lord to the next generation, 31) They will come and declare His righteousness to a people who will be born, that He has done this.”
Psalm 22:1-31, NKJV

Join me next week as we continue this journey to the foot of the cross.
